How to search for items
Our database is full categorised and cross referenced, to make your searching
easier, and help you drill down to the items you are seeking.
There are two stages in our search process, the primary
search, and the secondary search.
On the primary search there are two methods of
searching. You select a category and subcategory to which the item
may belong, or enter one or more key search word(s). If the primary
search returns ten or less results, these are displayed,
otherwise our secondary search page opens.
On the secondary search page you can still have
the option to display all your results, but you also have the option
of being able to refine your search, based on one or more features
of the items returned by the primary search.
Among the options available on the secondary search are category
and subcategory or keyword, (depending on which of these you
used in your primary search from), dealer, date the item was
manufactured (circa)
At each stage, the number of items meeting the various criteria
is shown, to assist you in refining your search.
If searching for ceramics, glass, furniture and sculpture, we suggest
you search by category and subcategory instead of by keyword i.
e. select Ceramics/Beswick from our drop down subcategory list instead
of typing in 'Beswick' as a keyword. This way you will be presented
with a much wider choice of secondary search options, including
shapes, styles, and material.
You can keep refining the choices on the secondary search
page until the list meets your requirements.

Where are the items included in your price guides sourced from?
The images are sourced from antiques and collectables dealers in
Australia and New Zealand. In preparing our annual Carter's
Price to Antiques in Australasia, and Carter's
Everything Vintage, each year we professionally photograph
between 14,000 and 16,000 items, and every item published is only
used once. Our online price guide includes published items from
the 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 editions of Carter's Price Guide to
Antiques in Australasia, and the 2006, 2007 and 2008 editions of
Everything Vintage, the post 1950s price guide. The online guide
also includes large number of items that have not yet been published.
Some images are not published due to space and layout consideration,
others are held over until the following year.
How often is ThePriceGuide.com.au updated?
Our most recent update was on January 2, 2008, and included all
the 14,000 approximately published and unpublished items photographed
for our 2008 price guides. In the future we may update more frequently.
ThePriceGuide.com.au now includes in excess of 55,000 items for
over 1,000 dealers.
What are the prices displayed based on?
Prices for all our items are supplied by the dealers where the item was photographed.
We express our prices as range around the dealer's ticket price of
each item.
Why is there a difference in prices between two similar articles.
Unlike your local supermarket, there is no one correct price for an antique or collectable item, and often there will be variations in the prices between two similar articles. Pricing can be influenced
by
- the amount paid by the dealer to purchase the item
- where the item was purchased (privately, by auction, imported etc),
- the dealer's knowledge of what is being sold
- the geographical area in which the dealer is located
- the type of goods the in which the dealer specialises
The prices shown are correct at the time the item was added to our database, but
as our database covers several years, prices shown for an article
may vary from current prices.
Can you provide a valuation of an item?
Sorry, we are unable to provide valuations. We are unable to respond to emails
requesting valuations. If you have an item on which you require
a valuation, we suggest you locate a similar item in our online
price guide, and then contact the dealer(s) who have those items.
Can you help me sell an item?
If you have an item to sell, we suggest you locate similar items in our online
price guide, and then contact the dealer(s) who have those items.
Remember the price ranges shown on our site are the retail prices,
so if you are selling, expect considerably less than the prices
shown.
Can I contact the dealers listed in your price guide?
Yes, for registered users, full pricing and dealer details are given for each item.
Can I purchase an item shown on your web site?
At the time we take the photographs the item was in stock with the dealer, but
bear in mind that several years may have passed since the item was
photographed. . Contact the dealer concerned to see whether it is
still in stock. If not, the dealer may have a similar item, or be
able to notify you when a similar items comes into stock. The age
of the photograph, or the fact a to whether an item is still in stock
does not affect the validity of this service as a price guide.
I'm a dealer, and I'd like to have items included in your price guides.
